Forested Flyways

One of our predecessor initiatives, the Forested Flyways program linked family forest owners across the United States with conservation groups and public agencies to restore and conserve critical habitat for birds and other wildlife. The Center for Conservation Solutions (CCS) incorporates Forested Flyways initiatives into our new work plan.

CCS conservation initiatives are multi-year collaborative efforts that promote ecosystem management to family forest owners to improve wildlife habitat across a region or a landscape. Center for Conservation Solutions initiatives:
  • develop wildlife habitat recommendations
  • coordinate implementation of conservation projects on family forestlands
  • direct family forest owners to sources of technical and cost-share assistance
  • educate family forest owners through educational field tours, self-guided conservation trails, handbooks and other publications
  • raise awareness of the voluntary actions of participating forestland owners.

In addition to specific initiatives, Center for Conservation Solutions also organizes individual outreach and education projects, such as a demonstration field day, with state partners. A model family forest owner’s property is chosen to highlight conservation management practices. Experts describe the conservation projects and the technical and financial assistance available from partners to improve wildlife habitat and watershed health. Field days provide an opportunity for landowners to share with their neighbors their positive experiences from actively managing their forests.
